Chester is starting the process of becoming a "Firewise Community". We have a committee and we are getting ready for the first order of business. Our community Assessment was conducted on April 23, 2018. Sue McCourt from OES and Sean Delacourt from Cal Fire assisted Joe Waterman, Chester Fire Department Chief, Sherry Johnston, Firewise Committee Member and Karen Lichti, PIO, Chester Fire Department.
We had a wonderful morning looking at maps of Chester and the surrounding areas, talking about the past fire history of the area and the potential for future wildland fires in the area. Then we took a tour of several homes in Chester to see what the potential fire danger there is to the structures. There was alot to discuss.
With the assessement done, the committee will get together and go over the assessment findings and start formulating a plan of action. Once that is done we will set some goals and start our community outreach and projects. We are also going to be preparing a CWPP. Once that is in place we will be able to apply for grants to help us with our Firewise projects.
The ultimate goal is that the residents of Chester will know the risk of fire danger around their home and know what steps to take and to accomplish those steps to become more fire resistant.
